Qopolis University, (pronounced – `kyoo op – Ō – lis), was developed to solve many problems with higher education and global warming. Every disruptive company is usually started small in the minds of one or two people like Apple, Microsoft, Disney, or Marvel Comics. Even President Reagan, along with many Presidential candidates considered abolishing Dept. of Education it was so bad. But it lives on dictating old-style ideas to every school district and university in its control.
To solve the MANY higher education problems, they had to get away from the old outdated, traditional, Rubber-stamped approved US Department of Education control. The 3 founders, Larry Zimmerman, Jimmy Higgins, and Anthony Chang, decided an exclusive, PRIVATE, non-accredited, university would be the best way to break the old mold and avoid the traditional university model, that is:

1. COVID-19 UPDATE

The traditional universities again, for good reasons this time, give the students a raw deal because they place their priorities on their faculty and staff (this time for a good reason other than profits and convenience), instead of the students.

2. Tradition –
4 Years to Apprentice.
Why does every degree program take 4-years to complete when some are harder than others?
For centuries, only the powerful and wealthy could afford to have their children educated by scholars. Royalty, clergy, and rich merchant families hired scholars to tutor their children and give them an education that the peasant families could not afford. The elite of society knew education was the key to success. All other families went the way of labor and skilled labor, working for those elite families’ companies.
Peasant “working class” family tradition was to work on farms or learn a trade to get a job and work for the elite. The ‘trade’ route took about three (3) years of apprenticing under a Master of some skill like violin making, watchmaking, blacksmith, cobbler, or a skilled carpenter.
Some tradesmen learned how to read and write, which pushed some into being scribes to create scrolls of knowledge. Some skills took longer than others to apprentice, but usually about 3 years. Then, the students studied under the grandmaster of the trade to become a master craftsman for another year or more. This age-old, tradition continued even into modern education systems of today.
Today, in the United States, all higher learning degrees are 4 years, no matter if it is art, history, electrical engineering, music theory, cellular biology, graphic design, or astrophysics. But everyone knows it is much more difficult to be an organic chemist than to graduate from a communications degree program. However, no matter the difficulty, all Bachelor degrees, at all major universities, take 4-years of study. This is due mostly to the old tradition of being an apprentice for 3 years before you learn to be a master at your trade.
Sadly, the “modern,” U.S. Department of Education, requires students to pay for 1 extra year of education, BEFORE they learn their ‘trade’. This one (1) extra year BEFORE learning a trade, is called, General Studies. This tradition was created before the PUBLIC, K-12 schools were available. The 1 extra year, taught students general studies of reading, writing, and math because a century ago, most students did not have enough basic education when they started at a university.
These “General Studies” classes were designed a century or more ago, when “traditionally” very few students had a good foundation in reading, writing, or math. However, today, even with average education in high school, almost any student allowed to use Google or other computer software, can answer almost any question, write a good paper with perfect spelling and grammar, and solve most normal, real-world, math problems using a calculator or spreadsheet. Yet, the first year, “General Studies” portion of a 4-year degree, is still required to be paid for by students by “traditional” universities; a complete waste of time and money!
The tradition of requiring General Studies for the first year increases the cost for education by 33% to students who are ready to learn a “trade” and become a worker or labor in a business owned by rich families.
The cost to take the first year helps drive up the total education costs for students, with little benefit. Banks, making student loans, benefit greatly from the extra year required. Most students do NOT benefit at all from the extra year. Most students do not even remember their first-year classes and could never pass the finals for those classes after graduation because the information taught in that first year, General Studies classes were mostly useless in their “trade/job” in the labor force of society.
There is no good reason to study 4 years for most degrees that are not rocket science when a degree in “rocket science” would take 4 years. But, tradition by the U.S. Department of Education, dictates this tradition over common sense. The tradition is so ingrained in U.S. universities, it is impossible to change from old traditions, even when they do not make sense anymore.
One of the most intelligent men ever born, Albert Einstein, refused to memorize anything that he could look up in less than 2 minutes. He said it was not important to clutter his mind with facts that could be found easily. Henry Ford, a very wealthy executive who started the Ford Motor Company, also said he found memorizing facts useless, especially historical facts. Henry Ford dropped out of school after the 6th grade, but he could easily get any information needed by picking up a phone on his desk and getting the information from one of his workers/labor.
Many people, who were not as wealthy or successful as Henry Ford, said it was important to memorize facts about history or government. those people used that thinking to develop old-style, traditional university degree programs still taught today. Obviously those things were not needed to become wealthy since Henry Ford did not have them but was one of the wealthiest business owners in history.
The commons sense of Einstein and Ford to NOT memorize facts, which are easily found, is not reflected in today’s traditional education degrees. All universities require you to memorize facts and information that can be easily “Googled” by almost anyone, anywhere.
Before we discuss solutions to problems, it is understood, that if all electricity is off, the Internet is down and nobody has a calculator available, something wrong has happened and it is temporary. If it is not temporary, then something terrible has happened and a discussion about education is not important.
Today, we still make students memorize things that they can easily look up on Google or other websites. Common sense of past and present successful men and women say we should change with the times and technology. Yet, that is not the case at today’s traditional universities.
Einstein’s and Ford’s common sense understanding of success, says that it is not necessary to test a student’s memorization of facts or formulas that are easily looked up. However, most university tests and most degree program finals are still focused on testing students’ memory of facts and formulas.
Curriculum developed for Qopolis University allows students to complete their lessons with common sense understanding that today we have SIRI, ALEXA, and GOOGLE. Also, Qopolis University classes are all designed to add value to a “real world” business situation and be very applicable in the “real world” business environment.
Traditional university students, under the US Department of Education requirements, must pay for a year of General Studies that has little to do with their degree and is usually just a repeat of the last year of High School. During that paid for, wasted year, they also spend unneeded expenses on living. That is one more year traditional students cannot apply their knowledge and earn a living. Qopolis University changes that old “tradition” and other “traditions.” Qopolis University students learn information about business in the first year that does not waste time and money.
Traditional Speed of Learning
Qopolis University has many classes recorded as videos online. Students never wait for a lecture and they never need to take notes. The video is always available to them online or downloaded. They can take it with them on their computer or “Smart Phone” and study anywhere at any time. They can move through all their classes faster than traditional students if they want. They learn and test when they want and do not wait on professors or testing schedules. They can graduate and start earning money sooner than traditional university students.
Why do schools spend so much on sports, when only a small number of the total students play on the teams?
For thousands of years, the strongest and fastest people were the rulers of society. When people used clubs and swords to conquer others, the most athletic men were the leaders of their society. Later, those who could organize, train, and outfit the best armies ruled the regions. Sports for boys were the way to filter out the weak and to find the strongest boys to be fighters/soldiers.
That, very old, tradition has changed from training armies to training sports teams. These artificial “armies of warriors”, (sports teams) “fight” on giant fields of artificial grass to win championships. The “war” teaches a player teamwork and leadership. But, in most traditional universities, a very small number of students are on sports teams.
Today, the tradition of using sports to teach teamwork and leadership has changed into giving a small number of students in the university, the most money for stadiums, locker rooms, gym equipment, coaches, etc. Most university students do not play on teams, but still pay for all the expense of a university team in their tuition.
Traditional universities will spend millions of dollars on approximately 100 football students in a university with tens of thousands of students. Only those 100 strong and fast will get training in teamwork and leadership in sports for the millions of dollars spent. But, all students are required to pay tuition that supports those millions spent on the few 1% of the student body. The 99% will pay for 1% to play, just like real life after graduation.
Each student’s tuition goes toward paying for the 1% to have multi-million dollar coaches, high tech gyms, nutritionists, doctors, tutors, athlete support facilities, stadiums, groundskeepers, food, transportation to other universities to play, insurance, etc. Tuition from those students, who may never even attend a game, is used to pay for those costs. This is because, the old tradition, of training an army to do combat is ingrained into the old traditional universities of today. That makes education more expensive for the 99%.
Qopolis University students will not pay for cleaning after a big game, replacing the light bulbs in a stadium, the electricity for lighting a giant stadium for night games, insurance to cover any liabilities to fans. Qopolis students will not pay for any expenses of a sports program at traditional universities. Qopolis University promotes teamwork and leadership training using modern methodologies in which all students can participate, not just the 1%. We don’t have any stadiums, but we might have E-Sports competitions!
Qopolis University’s removal of traditional combat/sports from a university’s expenses, when the main focus should be the education of students, reduces the cost of tuition. Old, traditional universities with sports teams must increase tuition to pay for those costs.
4. Old Tech
Why are traditional university students required to buy printed books, when digital books are so much more efficient, cheaper, and better for the environment?
Centuries ago, handwritten scrolls, were the holders of all knowledge that could be easily shared between people at a distance. People did not need to travel to the scholar/professor to learn what he taught to his students. You could read the knowledge and learn. If the scholar died, his scroll information allowed the student to learn from his knowledge after his death. A very well written scroll would give you the knowledge of others you never met. Scribes would apprentice for years to create written “books” with perfect penmanship written in straight lines. Look at the U.S. Constitution for a good example of this. It is a large, one page, scroll.
Libraries were created to hold valuable and delicate scrolls and bound pages (books). Students could read them only in the libraries. Students could learn the knowledge of scholars/professors far away could be shared.
To own a book of your own was very exclusive to the rich and powerful elite families, the 1%. Normal people did not have books of their own, not even bibles. Books were too expensive for most people and the knowledge in books remained mostly with wealthy 1% families and their children.
As books began to be printed in volume by publishers, they became cheaper. But, most books were still kept in libraries not accessible by the average person who could not travel to the library easily or possibly even read well.
An American named, Benjamin Franklin, understood, any country would be better with more educated people than countries with fewer educated people. He helped create PUBLIC libraries. Then, anyone in the society can learn from far away, scholars, not just the rich 1% and their children.
Almost every university today, was built around a library. All the best universities usually have many libraries. Traditionally, when books were expensive to print, each university student had a library card. The student could borrow books but must return them in good condition, then others may also learn from the books.
One hundred years past, printed books were expensive. Only universities supported by wealthy 1% or governments could buy books filled with the knowledge of scholars. Private universities, like Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, were supported by wealthy individuals and bought the most expensive books for their students. Governments opened libraries and created government “State” colleges around the libraries. The local government paid for the books, while students paid for the campus and professors.
Today, information is easily created digitally. The cost is almost nothing to copy any digital book. Google is digitizing all books in the Library of Congress. Google Books is free for anyone to use and access. The cost to distribute digital books is also, almost nothing using the Internet.
To update a digital book costs almost nothing. Updating a printed book requires a whole new book to be printed.
Most ‘traditional’ universities, require students to buy, PRINTED books that are usually outdated by at least a year. Printed books have many environmental and financial costs; the cost to trees for paper and ink to print, diesel fuel to ship/transport heavy books, storage heating/cooling, building construction to store, and landfill for disposal. Qopolis uses digital books and Internet pages that are very cheap or totally free to the student.
Traditional universities requiring printed books are usually very expensive for students. The true printing costs are very little. The monopoly of the university book publishers charges huge prices, far more than real printing costs to traditional university students. Traditional university students have no choice. They must pay the costs for printed books. Most students are shocked at the prices for books required by each university. Buying used books is not cheap either.
This, centuries-old tradition of using printed books in a library, causes tuition costs at traditional universities to be very expensive. It makes the best education available for only the rich in society.
Benjamin Franklin’s goal of getting more people educated, not only the rich, is dying at the traditional universities. Tuition is too expensive now for most families.
The ironic thing about university books today is, almost all information in the printed books can be found, free on the Internet. There is no reason now, to buy printed books with almost all the information in them, available for free on the Internet. But, traditional universities continue to make students buy printed books or pdf’s and make education more expensive. Qopolis University changes that.
All curriculum materials for Qopolis University students are 100% digital. There is no environmental impact by these “digital books.” All students can get updates immediately to any curriculum and never buy a printed book unless they want it. If business events change at the first of the semester, the Qopolis University professor can update the “digital curriculum” with the latest information before the final exam.
Traditional universities cannot update printed books quickly. Traditional universities make students buy “new” books that are a year or two old when published. The “new” books always teach older information to students.

Campus Around the Library
Why do students have to pay for things they never use?
As books made it important, centuries ago, to have libraries, universities also built huge campuses around those libraries. Most traditional universities started by building simple classrooms next to a library. As the library grew, universities added more buildings and more expenses, to be paid for by student tuition.
The traditional universities eventually built administration buildings, student housing dorms, cafeterias, maintenance facilities, utility structures, waste disposal, vehicle maintenance areas, parking lots, recreation facilities, etc. All of these contribute to Global Warming and increasing tuition to each student. They built structures to be huge and last for hundreds of years. They used huge stones and made giant cathedral ceilings. Those buildings are very pretty and impressive to see. They cost a lot more than normal buildings, to build and maintain. These huge buildings are usually very energy inefficient. The heating and cooling expenses are very high, as is their carbon footprint.
Traditional universities never discuss the environmental effect of a giant campus. The huge, green, campus looks very pretty on printed brochures. All that green grass requires petroleum-based fertilizer, watering, cutting, and weed killer chemicals. Do students’ families want to pay for all those expenses and increase Global Warming as well?
Many of today’s universities have buildings that are over 100 years old with new buildings being planned for new auditoriums, performing arts centers, study labs, student government offices, modern campus police departments, fire, and medical facilities etc. Students must pay for all these and so will the planet.

Why are old methods not changed to teach students using the best new methods?
Every young university student today has seen the Internet and modern gaming technology and software their entire life. The shift in how information is used, created, and distributed in the last 10 years is unparalleled. Never, in human history, has technology changed so rapidly and so profoundly effected society and business, as in the last decade. Almost every part of our culture has changed drastically or is trying to change, because of the Internet and technology advances. Many areas are doing a poor job, because of little funding or old technologies and traditions. This is very obvious in higher education at old, traditional universities.
All young students have lived in a time when the internet changed the way society makes phone calls, plays games, sends and creates new information. But, traditional universities continue to use printed books that cannot be searched or easily copied to a document, email, or text. Most professors continue to use a chalkboard/Whiteboard, slide shows, or overhead projectors during their traditional 45-minute lectures.
Strangely, the actual design of traditional university 45-minute lecturing has been shown by Harvard research to be almost useless to students attending the lecture, for learning and understanding the information. Studies found that 10-minute lectures are the optimum time for a human to learn and comprehend a lesson, then put in a 10-minute usage of those lessons and they are transferred to long term memory. But, what university is able to change its 45-minute tradition and methods? Not even Harvard where the studies were done.
Today’s average university student grew up playing games on a small screen, hand-held mini-computer. Some students had “Gameboys” or “PS3” players. Many students had home gaming systems like Nintendo or XBox. In the last years, many students have had mobile phone applications (apps), including Internet-connected software. Few young adults send handwritten letters using cursive or use an old-style dial phone. All professors can remember doing those things and some still do them because they do not know how to use the new technology.
Children playing video computer games have learned complicated rules, solutions, and critical thinking skills to win. They know how to program digital DVRs and find things on home computers for their parents. Young adults send text messages to their friends on tiny screens faster than most adults can type. And they learned all those things without going to classes with a teacher talking at them for 45 minutes. Why should they still use old-style higher education class designs?
Most adults today cannot understand their actions and the love their children have for these interactive things. That is why, today’s “traditional” education system for these children, is lost in the past and using decades, old, methodologies, to teach modern and integrated children.
